Rick Russo The Ukulele Crooner – ValleyCAST 2020/2021 Art & Music Makers Festival

Rick Russo, The Ukulele Crooner with a voice “unspoiled” by Rock and Roll, has swooned audiences for years with his sweet, tremulous tenor and ethereal falsetto, accompanied by his lithesome strumming on the soprano ukulele.

Rick has been a featured performer at several Ukulele Hall of Fame Expos from New York to Santa Cruz in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. He was also a member of the Boston based Ukulele Noir troupe that entertained crowds in Cambridge.

Rick is exactly one half of the Providence, RI based duo “The Mai Tai Serenaders.”

There are book artists who use junk mail and magazines; artists who use scraps of paper to create an image; artists who create artwork from savaged buttons or bottle caps; and artists who create sculpture from old bicycles, door knobs, car parts, spindles and the like, as in the image below.

This week we celebrate Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, MA. Harvey created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognized symbol of goodwill and cheer in the world.

Each year, on the first Friday in October, we celebrate World Smile Day in his honor.
